Installing Skylight Fixtures For The Do It Yourselfer
Installing skylight fixtures in your home is beneficial on several levels. For starters, the natural light
they provide can dramatically improve your mood. Studies have shown this natural light not only makes you feel better, it also regulates your
body's internal clock. In addition, installing a skylight can actually help your body produce much needed vitamins like vitamin D.
So who should install skylight fixtures in their home? Well just about everyone will benefit. If you're feeling a little down a skylight can
help. If you simply need more light or would like to cut your energy bills, a skylight will help with that as well.
This can be an easy job for an experienced do it yourselfer, but if you don't fall into that catagory, it may be a good idea to leave the
installation to professionals. If you do decide you want to do it, then your first step is to find out if you need a building permit. Often times
city's require these permits simply to make sure the job is completed properly. A permit is less likely to be needed in a rural area. But again,
even though installing a skylight is not a big job, it's good to be sure if a permit is required in your area.
Now you want to be sure you have everything you need to do the job right. Normally you'll only need basic tools, but look over the tools list
provided by the manufacturer just to be sure you don't find out in the middle of the job that you need to run out and get something else. Outside
of the tools, most of the time everything else you need will be included in the kit.
The next step is to carefully measure and mark the area where you will be installing the skylight. Cut the hole to the specifications provided
but be careful when cutting. You certainly don't want to run into any internal wiring when you are making your hole. Of course you'll want to
have a firm grip on your saw. A blade that gets bound in the roof can easily cause you to lose your footing which can be dangerous if you are on
a ladder.
Finally, fit the light in the hole you have made and follow the manufacturers instructions to install it. All the seams should be sealed with
weather stripping, silicone or both. It's really not too difficult a job for someone with a little experience. Then sit back and enjoy the
natural light you'll get in room where it was installed.
